How Old Do You Have to be to Work at GameStop?

Generally speaking, in order to get an entry-level position at GameStop as an hourly game advisor, you’ll need to be at least 18 years of age. One of the main reasons for this is that GameStop carries titles that are rated “M” for Mature, which contains mature content and is only playable for people that are 17 years of age or older.

Teen Jobs at GameStop and Age Requirements

Game Advisor (Hourly)

As a game advisor, you’ll be the individual who speaks with customers on a regular basis. You’ll be walking the sales floor and making sure that every customer is taking care of and answer the questions that they have. It’s helpful to be outgoing and knowledgeable about all of the different game titles that customers may be interested in as well as different gaming consoles.

For this position, you’ll have to be 18 years of age or older.

Senior Game Advisor (Hourly)

A senior game advisor does everything that a game advisor does, but your roles will expand to assist the store management team in supervising different activities.  Beyond that, you may be expected to deal with more difficult customers and help fix problems that a regular game advisor may not be able to.  Lastly, you’ll also assist with product selection, inventory, loss prevention, and more.

For this position, you’ll have to be 18 years of age or older.  However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be hired directly into this position because it’s typically reserved for Game Advisors that end up getting promoted. So, it’s more likely that you’ll have to be 19-21 years old to get offered this position.

Assistant Manager (Hourly)

The assistant manager position is just below a store manager and is involved in everything that a store manager does, but you’ll have a little less responsibility. You’ll be in charge of dealing with the more difficult customers, but you also be more involved with product selection, purchases, returns, and you may even find yourself supervising up to five employees at a time while planning and delegating work responsibilities.

For this position, it’s likely that you’ll have to have a few years of retail experience in order to be considered. Though the company usually likes to promote from within, anyone who gets this position is likely between 20-22 years of age.

GameStop Interview Questions

Although there are many different questions that can be asked in an interview and it always depends on who the interviewer is, there are some common questions that seem to pop up more often at GameStop.

Do you know how to up-sell at the cash register?  How would you feel about doing this?

Why are they asking?

The reason that the interviewer asked you this question is they’re trying to figure out if you’re comfortable with sales. An upsell is when you encourage a customer who is ready to check out to add something else to their order such as an additional game or a membership.

What’s the ideal answer?

The interviewer wants to hear you say that you have no problem doing this and that you understand doing so will increase the total revenue for the store.

What video games do you like?

Why are they asking?

This question is to see how passionate you are about video games as a whole. It’s likely that they’re looking for someone that’s well-rounded and not just a fan of one genre of video games, but enjoys a lot of different ones.

What’s the ideal answer?

You want to be truthful here and say what your favorite video games are, but it also would be a great idea to talk about video games that you don’t play as often and explain to the interviewer how you enjoy those as well. The key here is to show that your knowledge about video games is well-rounded.

What game consoles are you familiar with?

Why are they asking?

If you are only familiar with one video game console, that might be a big red flag in your interview. Just like the video games, here the interviewer is trying to understand your full scope of knowledge to see if you’d be a good fit for the position. Remember that customers prefer different consoles and the more experience and knowledge you have, the better.

What’s the ideal answer?

You should state what your favorite game console is, but also talk about times that you’ve used other game consoles and how you’re very familiar and comfortable with them. Because most video games are published for all consoles, this shouldn’t be that big of an issue.
